Using the deceptively altruistic-sounding moniker, “Citizens for McLendon-Chisholm,” a Political Action Committee [PAC] was created by MC’s political establishment in concert with major developers to oppose the tax rollback.
All of those who are engaged in this PAC are also full-throated supporters of Mayor Gary Moody, Councilman Steve Hatfield, and their hand-picked candidate for city council, Place 2, Mark Kipphut. Filing documents demonstrate that this PAC also shares the same political consultant and vendors, not to mention donors, with all three of their favored candidates. The PAC’s leader is Mike Donegan, the former MC mayor who set our city on a course that Moody, Hatfield, and Kipphut are simply trying to continue. The treasurer and secretary of this PAC are two long-time former city council members who were both booted out of office and they want back in!!!
The March 22 post, “Tax Rollback Opposition is Forged on a Lie,” provides more insight into the lies and deceit being propagated by Donegan and his PAC.
Candidate Forum Was Not What It Seemed
In an attempt gain legitimacy and credibility, PAC leaders organized a Candidate Forum on April 18, where the city council reportedly granted them the privilege of using the new city hall building at no cost, with the understanding that the forum be “unbiased.”
Ignoring the agreement, the postcard invitation sent to voters (above) was pure propaganda advocating against the tax rollback.
By disallowing the topic of the rollback from the forum the PAC ensured that voters would only learn their side of the story, especially since, as sponsors, they would encourage attendees to visit their website.
Just as they would not add legitimacy and credibility to an anti-gun right’s group by participating in a forum sponsored by such an organization, three candidates, Nathan Hodges, Wayne Orchard, & Robert Steinhagen refused to attend this event!
