Fresh off his failed effort to convince voters that a tax rollback would harm the city’s contribution to our volunteer fire department, former McLendon-Chisholm [MC] Mayor, Mike Donegan is now attempting to impugn my efforts to shrink our government with a new array of misinformation in last week’s letter to the editor.
Donegan, a full-throated advocate of last year’s proposed $0.32 tax rate, (a 228% increase), hides the fact that my support for keeping the current tax rate ($0.15205) in the PRELIMINARY BUDGET is only because my presentation Tuesday, which was delayed for more than two months, requires a citizen survey BEFORE the budget is finalized.
I stand on the conviction that NO TAX-RATE INCREASE, which the skyrocketing property assessments effectively do, should be approved WITHOUT the CONSENT OF THE PEOPLE.
Should time run out to conduct a survey, which now appears to be the case, my conservative colleagues on the council understand that when the vote to approve comes, I WILL BE MOVING TO REDUCE THE TAX RATE to $0.141822!
Unlike surrounding cities that provide taxpayers with multiple government services, the MC City Council essentially has JUST ONE governing responsibility, which is protecting building standards within our city limits, most especially the city’s “1.5-acre minimum per-homestead” standard.
However, the buck has been passed to non-elected and unaccountable political appointees via the Planning & Zoning Commission [P&Z] (two members aren’t even MC citizens) and Board of Adjustment [BOA], both dominated by Donegan appointees and friends.
As mayor, Donegan appointed one of Sonoma Verde’s three designated homebuilders to the P&Z (now its chairman), which, despite fierce citizen opposition, helped Donegan fast-track development agreements for both Sonoma Verde (1,100+ homes on 509 acres) and Triple Creek, a 1,500+ acre tract of land owned by a Donegan’s friend, most of which is in a floodplain, where 1,867 homes would sit on the 409 “build-able acres!”
It makes sense then why ousted members of the city council & members & former members, P&Z, BOA, and homebuilders/developers funded Donegan’s failed tax-rollback opposition PAC!
Mike Donegan’s attack against me is as hypocritical as it is bankrupt of integrity.
My proposal to eliminate the P&Z and BOA will force the city council to be fully accountable for its ONE and ONLY responsibility to govern and will help to eradicate the power and influence of corrupt liberal elitists like Donegan.
