Simply put, a representative is one who represents the will of the majority of voters and takes no action in opposition to them. When their own values conflict with the will of the majority, their mindset is to try and persuade support toward their position BEFORE taking any action. When efforts to influence public opinion fall short, they do not act.
More formally, I believe that elected officials are REPRESENTATIVES OF, NOT TRUSTEES FOR, the people.
Trustees act on behalf of those who are not competent to understand or make decisions for themselves. Hence, an elected official who takes on the role of a trustee does what they believe is in the people’s best interest, even if the people may not understand or agree. Trustees are unconcerned when those who elected them fail to understand a decision made on their behalf, because, after all, they see themselves as better informed and on the inside of information, which to them makes them more capable than any passing observer whose infrequent intrusions serve only to muddle progress. Concealing information and obscuring facts is how they hold power. When threatened by disclosure of crooked facts, a trustee will jump on a pedestal of his own pure motives while insinuating ulterior intent upon those who challenge their actions. They don’t ask people to judge their heart and not their actions, instead they say how dare anyone judge their actions instead of their heart.
Conversely, as a Representative of the People, I represent what I believe the majority of the people would want or do if they were to vote on an issue. I work to anticipate the concerns of citizens when considering action and are studious to work to ensure that constituents are well informed. I communicate to help the people better understand why an action is in the people’s best interest BEFORE I act. When extraordinary action is up for consideration, such as moving the city into debt for the first time, as a representative, I should take extraordinary steps to ensure that the right of the voters to decide is protected. Transparency is the hallmark of a Representative mindset where constituent questions and concerns are a welcomed break from the laborious grind of government minutiae. My actions should demonstrate the convictions of my character, for only God can judge the heart of man.
I am committed to restoring representative government to the city of McLendon-Chisholm!
