We’ve cleaned house of all the glad-handing good ole’ boy appointees that helped orchestrate the many behind closed-door decisions that seem to have padded the pockets of everyone but M-C taxpayers.
Unlike then, we now require that all appointees to any committee, including Planning and Zoning (P&Z) and Board of Adjustment, be citizens of M-C.
Were you aware that the longest-serving member of the P&Z (20+ years) when Wayne & I first took office was a homebuilder/developer & one of the largest land-holders of property bordering our city, which is a big motivator for him to see our city grow as it would make his property so much more valuable. He also served on the city hall committee that recommended against putting the bond on a ballot for voters to decide. Let’s just say that he made a fast exit from the P&Z shortly after we took office!
Restoring common sense ethics.
Among other things, our new Code of Ethics defines things like inappropriate conflicts of interests, like related parties, which should have been common sense back then, but wasn’t.
Believe it or not, when Wayne & I joined the council, the chairman of the City’s Planning and Zoning Commission [P&Z] is a homebuilder & developer as well as the father of the city’s largest homebuilder; a business he had sold to his son who rebranded it, “Altura.”
No longer can a member of the P&Z or Board of Adjustment [BOA] vote, participate in a discussion, or even be present in the room when business comes before either of these bodies where a conflict of interest exists.
Had these new standards been in place back then, as both a member of and Treasurer for the MCVFD, which was a contractor with the City, Councilman Steve Hatfield would have been required to recuse himself from discussion or voting on actions that involved taxpayer funding to it.
Also, Mayor Gary Moody would have had to publicly disclose that he was the salesperson that sold and made monthly income from carrying Sonoma Verde’s lucrative insurance policy (when he lost the election it appears that the developer found a better policy at a better rate).
